Iris Zhi, MD, PhD

As a breast medical oncologist at Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, I am dedicated to providing care that combines the latest advancements in cancer treatment with a deep commitment to understanding and supporting my patients. My role as the medical director for clinical operations in medical oncology allows me to enhance access to National Cancer Institute-designated cancer care in Long Island by streamlining processes and ensuring the highest quality treatment close to home.

I specialize in breast cancer care for both men and women, with a particular focus on managing treatment-related side effects, such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. My research interests include exploring acupuncture and integrative oncology approaches to alleviate symptoms during a patient’s cancer journey. Additionally, I have a special interest in caring for young adults and older patients, addressing their unique challenges from fertility concerns to balancing treatment with pre-existing health conditions.

I believe in the importance of listening to my patients, providing clear explanations of complex information, and fostering a partnership built on trust and open communication. My approach is to meet each patient where they are, helping them find hope and regain control over their lives beyond cancer. I have been recognized with honors such as Top Doctors on Long Island and the Stage IV Champion Award. Additionally, my work has been featured in Newsday and Everyday Health, showcasing my contributions to oncology operations, research, and education.

My journey into medicine began with a passion for curiosity, science, and human connection. During my PhD training, I studied small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which led to groundbreaking treatments like Gleevec for chronic myeloid leukemia. This experience showed me how scientific discoveries can transform cancer care, inspiring me to pursue a career in oncology. I am privileged to be part of this ever-evolving field, bringing together the best of science, innovation, and compassionate care to make a real difference in my patients’ lives.
