I had a life-threatening illness when I was a child, and my family and I became close with my doctor. He was caring and kind and was always there for us. He was an inspiration to me. My mom was a psychologist, and I learned that a doctor could understand how a child is feeling through play and drawing. I decided to become a doctor so I could help children.

During medical school in Argentina, I worked at an organization for children with autism spectrum disorder. I received training in applied behavior analysis, the gold standard treatment for this condition. Helping children with autism to reach their full potential was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I wanted to make a difference in children’s lives, so I chose to specialize in developmental and behavioral pediatrics.

I care for young children who have autism, developmental delays, sleep disorders, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and speech, language, and motor delays. In school-age children, I manage learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, and attention and behavior disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I care for children of all ages who have cancer or a chronic illness, which may cause anxiety or lead to learning disabilities or behavioral problems. I also evaluate and treat children who have been exposed to trauma.

I evaluate each child’s strengths and challenges and work with parents or caregivers to create a plan of care. I help families access special education services, tutoring, and support services. I monitor a child’s progress over time.

During an office visit, I meet with the child and their parents or caregivers. We discuss the child’s strengths, and I listen very carefully to their concerns and how they are affecting the family dynamics. I take note of which toys the child decides to play with and observe their interactions.

The next step involves testing. This might include cognitive, academic, and speech and language testing as well as a behavioral assessment. I discuss the results with parents and suggest evidence-based treatment options.

I use a family-centered approach to treatment, meaning the family is part of the treatment decision. Parents and caregivers know their children the best. When a child is old enough, they become part of the team, and I listen to their treatment preferences.

At NYU Langone, I collaborate with pediatricians, neonatologists, social workers, physical therapists, and clinical geneticists. I also work with the specialists at NYU Langone’s Down Syndrome Program. When necessary, I can refer patients to specialists, such as gastroenterologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and psychiatrists.

I have the privilege of caring for my patients until they become young adults. It is rewarding when patients come back to see me and they have made progress. When I treat a child, I treat the family as well. In some cases, I have become close to my patients’ families—just as my childhood doctor was close to mine.
