About Me
As a psychiatrist at NYU Langone, I am dedicated to providing dynamic and empathetic care to my patients. My approach is rooted in the belief that mental healthcare should be as precise and individualized as possible. I am passionate about understanding the complexities of the human mind and helping my patients achieve a balanced and fulfilling life.
My primary areas of expertise include the psychopharmacologic treatment of refractory psychotic disorders, treatment-resistant depression, and manic depression with panic disorder. With extensive experience, I have honed my skills in customizing treatment plans to meet the unique needs of diverse populations, particularly South Asians. My research and clinical practice have shown that different populations can respond differently to the same medications, which has driven my interest in cross-cultural psychiatry. I also supervise other psychiatrists in managing acute aggression and complications of affective and psychotic disorders in an inpatient setting.
Throughout my career, I have been committed to proactive healthcare engagement. I believe in the importance of patient education and the value of independent, third-party reviews. My role as the chief of the department allows me to share my experience with various medical, surgical, and psychiatric teams, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances patient care. My recommendations often involve a combination of talk therapy, medication, partial hospital programs, case management, and assisted outpatient treatment (AOT). When necessary, I consult with or refer patients to my highly skilled colleagues for specialized care.
My journey into psychiatry was inspired by my father, an ophthalmologist, who was one of my earliest role models. Initially drawn to surgery, I found my true calling in psychiatry, captivated by the depth and fluidity of the field. My training at Columbia University and my residency at Bellevue provided me with a strong foundation in psychopharmacology and cross-cultural psychiatry. These experiences have shaped my approach to patient care, emphasizing empathy, precision, and a commitment to improving the quality of life for my patients.
