Dara Khatib, MD, MPH

My career in emergency medicine is driven by a passion for comprehensive patient care and a deep commitment to public health. While in medical school, I encountered patients from all walks of life, and then inspired me to view medicine as more than just a career. These experiences led me to pursue a specialty that aligns closely with public health, emergency medicine.

Emergency medicine appeals to me because it offers a dynamic and unpredictable environment where quick thinking and comprehensive medical knowledge are essential. I am drawn to the teamwork and camaraderie that are vital to running an effective emergency department. My ability to connect with patients from all backgrounds allows me to provide compassionate and personalized care, even in high-pressure situations.

My time at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health solidified my commitment to this specialty, teaching me the importance of addressing health disparities and advocating for systemic changes. As an emergency physician, I have the unique position to witness firsthand the challenges faced by patients and to use these insights to inform policy and public health initiatives. My goal is to not only provide excellent care within the emergency department but also to be a proactive advocate for patients on a larger scale.

Now, as the associate service chief of the NYU Langone Health—Cobble Hill Emergency Department, I am privileged to help lead a dedicated team of professionals. This role allows me to not only practice emergency medicine but also contribute to the growth and development of our department. I am committed to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and compassionate care. My experience in public health and my passion for patient advocacy continue to inform my approach to leadership, as I strive to create an environment where both patients and staff feel supported and valued. My goal is to ensure that our emergency department remains a place of healing and a beacon of hope for all who seek our care.
