Research Summary

As a trauma surgeon, my research focuses on enhancing surgical competence in managing high-acuity, low-occurrence (HALO) injuries through the use of advanced simulation. Recognizing the infrequent nature of the worst of these life-threatening injuries, and the limitations of real-patient practice, my work centers on creating realistic and immersive training environments for medical students, residents, and fellows to refine their surgical skills, particularly when every second matters and someone's life is on the line.

My current projects involve utilizing a next-generation human surgical simulator to replicate severe traumatic bleeding and organ injury, allowing trainees to perform operative procedures in a high-fidelity setting. These simulations are enhanced by allowing the students to "stop time," allowing for real-time correction, feedback and mentorship. The effectiveness of this approach is measured through assessments that provide objective feedback, leading to improved skill acquisition and increased confidence among trainees in managing the most complex of operative traumatic injuries.
