About Me
As an experienced psychiatrist at NYU Langone, I am committed to providing my patients with attentive, compassionate, and scientifically informed care. This dedication is rooted in the Hippocratic oath I took over 40 years ago in which I promised to dedicate myself to my patients and to keep their secrets, a promise I have honored throughout my career. My interest in psychiatry was ignited during my internship at Albany Medical Center, where I saw firsthand the healing power of words, and the power of presence.
My broad experience and unwavering commitment to my patients form the foundation of my work. There is little I have not seen and few conditions I have not treated in my lengthy career. While I recognize the value of medication in treatment, I also stress the crucial role of talking and communication in psychotherapy. This blend of scientific knowledge and empathy defines my approach to patient care. My career has seen me in various roles, clinician, educator, and clinical researcher. I have written or edited many textbooks in psychiatry which have been translated into several languages.
After training at NYU Langone Bellevue, I served as a military psychiatrist in the US Air Force. This role offered me a unique perspective on mental health, especially PTSD and veteran mental health. After completing my military service, I returned to New York to establish a private practice and join the faculty at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where I eventually earned tenure as the Menas S. Gregory professor of psychiatry.
I am honored to be part of the NYU Langone Department of Psychiatry where I can impart the wisdom gained in my long career to my students and patients.
