Research Summary

While I have wanted to be a pediatrician for as long as I can remember, I fell in love with Pediatric Emergency Medicine as a medical student because it felt like “doctoring” at its purest. I love experiencing the breadth of patients’ stories, developmental stages, illnesses, and acuities in the Emergency Department and especially enjoy the art of differential diagnosis – the Sherlock Holmesian process of applying evidence to deduce the cause of a patient’s symptoms.

I have particular background and interest in caring for children who are critically ill and/or have complex underlying medical conditions. With our numerous pediatric specialties, NYU Langone-Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital serves as a premier medical home for many children in New York City. It is my privilege to evaluate, stabilize, and treat our patients in communication with colleagues who care for them longitudinally.

Communication is central to the practice of emergency medicine, as a visit to the Emergency Department can be frightening and overwhelming for anyone. I have received grants and awards to support my work with patients, families, trainees, and organizations (including our own Sala Institute for Children and Families) to improve patient- and family-centered care in the Emergency Department.

Beyond the clinical realm, I spend most of my time as a medical educator and educational leader. As Vice Chair for Education, Scholarship, and Academic Development in the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine, I oversee our department’s core residency program, nine fellowships, undergraduate medical education, mentorship programs, community education programs, and educational scholarship. I am passionate about developing, implementing, and evaluating educational curricula to train the next generation of physicians who will care for us and our loved ones.

I have worked with national organizations (including the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the Association for American Medical Colleges) to develop standards for education and assessment. I have won various awards for my teaching of medical students and residents, and have shared my work through 20+ publications and 40+ regional and national presentations. I am grateful and humbled to be part of the brilliant community here at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and to serve our community.
