NYU Langone clinicians are experts in treating conditions caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), which is easily transmitted by sexual contact. Of the more than 150 strains of HPV, 40 affect the genital area. Some of these strains can lead to genital warts; others can lead to cancer of the cervix—the passageway that connects the uterus to the vagina in women—as well as to cancers of the vagina, vulva, penis, anus, mouth, and throat. Most people with HPV will never develop warts or cancer.
HPV infection is common in sexually active adults and teens, regardless of gender, and our clinicians treat many people diagnosed with HPV each year. Our team can provide a vaccine against HPV and perform procedures to diagnose and treat genital warts and address abnormal cervical and anal cells.
Our providers treat genital and anal warts using medications or surgical procedures. Our providers may perform minimally invasive surgical procedures in women to treat abnormalities of the cervical and anal cells caused by an HPV infection.
