NYU Langone Health stroke care has earned top recognition from the American Heart Association (AHA). The health system’s Comprehensive Stroke Center locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn and on Long Island and its Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk were honored for delivering fast, evidence-based, and consistently excellent treatment.

Based on quality data from the past calendar year, each of NYU Langone’s three Comprehensive Stroke Center locations received the AHA’s Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Award, the highest tier of recognition. They were also placed on these honor rolls:

• Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll
• Target: Stroke Advanced Therapy Honor Roll
• Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk was recognized as a Primary Stroke Center and earned the Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Award. The accolades demonstrated the continued growth and integration of stroke services on the East End of Long Island since the hospital joined NYU Langone. They were also placed on these honor rolls:

"Our multidisciplinary teams across every campus are trained to respond rapidly and effectively, because when it comes to stroke, time is brain—every second counts.”

Recognized for Speed and Advanced Intervention

The Gold Plus Award recognizes hospitals that demonstrate sustained compliance—for 24 consecutive months or more—with the AHA’s core stroke quality measures. These measures span the continuum of stroke care, including early antithrombotic therapy, anticoagulation for patients with atrial fibrillation, and intensive statin therapy at discharge. To qualify, hospitals must meet these benchmarks in at least 85 percent of eligible patients.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center’s honor roll placements were reflections of exceptional speed in delivering potentially lifesaving clot-dissolving medication. At least 75 percent of eligible patients were treated within 45 minutes of arrival, and at least 50 percent within 30 minutes.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center was also recognized for its rapid use of interventional devices, such as stent retrievers and thrombectomy tools, that serve as a critical second line of defense in complex stroke cases. At least half of eligible patients received device-based treatment within 90 minutes of arriving directly at the hospital, or within 60 minutes of being transferred from another facility.

“Modern stroke care depends on precision, preparation, and seamless teamwork in high-stakes moments,” said Erez Nossek, MD, chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery and director of NYU Langone’s Center for Stroke and Neurovascular Diseases. “At NYU Langone, our vascular neurologists, neurointerventional radiologists, and cerebrovascular neurosurgeons work as a single, unified team—evaluating patients, planning treatment, and performing complex procedures together. This recognition for advanced therapy affirms that our integrated model translates directly into faster, safer, and more effective care for patients with the most-complex neurovascular disease.”

All four stroke centers were recognized for adhering to the composite standards of the AHA’s diabetes cardiovascular initiative for 12 consecutive months. They also show excellence in caring for stroke patients with diabetes—a population at elevated cardiovascular risk—by meeting rigorous benchmarks across thrombolysis, antithrombotic and anticoagulation therapy, statin use, and diabetes treatment.
