New Facility Has Staff of 58, Ample Consultation & Exam Rooms, Patient Education Suite, Teleconferencing, Valet Parking & More
NYU Winthrop Hospital held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to herald the opening of a brand new office facility for its Perlmutter Cancer Center at Winthrop Oncology Hematology Associates. More than 100 of the hospital’s esteemed physicians, cancer specialists, administrators, medical support staff, and VIP guests turned out for the unveiling of the elegant new facility. The large space enables the hospital to offer comprehensive cancer services to patients under one roof. Within the same building, patients also have access to the hospital’s infusion center, comprehensive diagnostic imaging services, as well as the offices of a multitude of other professional cancer service providers. The new space will be a central focal point among the NYU Winthrop Hospital’s greatly expanded cancer services, allowing for a more seamless delivery of care across a multitude of new and expanded cancer services now offered at NYU Winthrop. The overall expansion of cancer services includes the addition of many new cancer specialists in both the oncology–hematology practice and several other cancer specialists, in line with the hospital’s overall mission to deliver the finest cancer care in the region.
“NYU Winthrop has now emerged as the Long Island leader in the war on cancer,” said Jeffrey G. Schneider, MD, chief of the Division of Oncology–Hematology at NYU Winthrop Hospital. “Our new state-of-the-art facility will further support us in our mission and commitment to best protect our patient population from this dreaded disease at every level, incorporating state-of-the art programs in cancer prevention, early detection, and multidisciplinary treatments. We now combine these programs of excellence and compassion with a beautiful new facility where we can most effectively deliver them.”
The new office, located in Suite 500 at 120 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, is situated in more than 8,000 square feet, compared to a prior location spread over two separate suites. The new space features an expansive entrance and waiting area designed in warm earth tones and with an elongated 35-foot reception desk shaped like undulating waves. The office suite includes 12 exam rooms, a soothing-looking and comfortable consultation room, and a patient education room. The latter serves as both a resource center with informative pamphlets on various cancers as well as a place where nurses—including research team nurses—can educate patients on standard cancer treatment options, as well as innovative approaches available through participation in a broad array of active cancer clinical trials. The facility is also equipped with the most up-to-date technologies, including teleconferencing that might be used in the future for elements of “virtual” patient care.
On the first floor of the same building, NYU Winthrop offers radiology services, and on the sixth floor are cancer infusion services such as intravenous delivery of medications for chemotherapy and other antitumor treatments. Additional plans are currently in progress to convert the remaining floors of the Mineola Boulevard facility to house other cancer specialists. The building also offers much-appreciated valet parking service for patients.
The newly opened cancer treatment facility will host 58 staff members. The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, fellows, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, registered nurses, medical assistants, registrars, secretaries, file clerks, a social worker, academic coordinator, and office manager and office coordinator. Among those professionals are “Cancer Navigators”—nurses and physician assistants who offer personalized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers throughout the cancer journey from pre-diagnosis through treatment and beyond. The Cancer Navigators’ complimentary and compassionate service helps those impacted to move seamlessly through the many diagnostic tests, procedures, physician visits, and treatments and also offers additional holistic support services that include emotional and social support, and financial and nutritional counseling.
“At NYU Winthrop, we offer the seamless integration of all cancer specialists and supporting staff, with patient-centered care delivered through an innovative and comprehensive approach,” added Eva Chalas, MD, physician director of Center for Cancer Care at NYU Winthrop Hospital. “We not only offer world-class services but are a center with focus on quality of life and excellent long-term outcomes.”
