NYU Langone Health has received two awards for delivering outstanding patient care from Vizient, Inc., formerly the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). On Thursday, September 19, NYU Langone accepted the 2019 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance, and the Vizient Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in an outpatient setting. The awards were presented during the 2019 Vizient Clinical Connections Summit in Denver.
“Excellence in quality and safety is what NYU Langone strives for when it comes to patient care,” says Robert I. Grossman, MD, the Saul J. Farber Dean of NYU School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Langone Health. “These honors are a testament to how our culture of collaboration, quality, and accountability lead to world-class results for our patients and their families and caregivers across our institution and throughout our ambulatory network.”
The Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award
The Vizient 2019 Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability recognizes NYU Langone as No. 1 of participating medical centers nationwide who are included in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality, efficient, and effective patient-centered care in outpatient settings. The study measured performance in five domains: access to care, quality, efficiency, continuum of care, and equity. The composite scoring system utilizes practice and patient-level data across several databases including the Vizient–Association of American Medical Colleges Clinical Practice Solutions Center. The recognition period is for work spanning July 2018 through June 2019.
The Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award
The Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award, named in memory of NYU Langone’s former chief of hospital operations and UHC board member, recognizes NYU Langone for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care based on five key organizational characteristics: shared sense of purpose; hands-on leadership style; vertical and horizontal accountability; a focus on results; and collaboration. This year NYU Langone ranked No. 2, up from its No. 3 ranking in 2018. This award marks NYU Langone’s 8th consecutive year in the top 10, and the 7th consecutive year in the top 3. This year, 50 faculty practices were included in the Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability measurement and 93 comprehensive academic medical centers were included in the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking.
NYU Langone’s Continued Commitment to Delivering Outstanding Patient Care
For the past six years, NYU Langone has also received top rankings for overall patient safety and quality of care from Vizient. Additionally, NYU Langone is one of the top ranked hospitals in the country on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals.” In 2018, NYU Langone also received The Gold Seal of Approval® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America, reflecting a commitment to high-quality patient care. Our nurses are also recognized for excellence in the care they provide, receiving Magnet® status for the fourth consecutive time from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet® recognition is an honor achieved by only 8 percent of all hospitals in the United States, with fewer than 1 percent receiving this designation 4 or more times.
Vizient, the largest member-driven health care performance improvement company in the country, represents the integration of Voluntary Hospitals of America, Inc., UHC, and Novation, which combined in 2015.
