People with cancer still need treatment during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Doctors at cancer centers, including Perlmutter Cancer Center—Huntington and Perlmutter Cancer Center—Lake Success, are modifying treatments to limit exposure to the virus for people with cancer, Newsday reports.
“Unfortunately, cancer doesn’t wait,” Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, director of NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, tells Newsday. “The mortality for cancer patients who contract COVID is higher, and while we don’t know exactly why that is, we do try to limit their exposure whenever possible.”
