In 2015, Maribel Ramos was diagnosed for the fourth time with cancer. This time, it was stage IV triple-negative breast cancer. In an effort to avoid additional chemotherapy and radiation, Ms. Ramos enrolled in a clinical trial evaluating an immunotherapy drug called atezolizumab at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center. Now cancer-free for six years, Ms. Ramos tells her survivorship story to the Cancer Research Institute.
“I’d want to let other cancer patients know that sometimes we need to take risks,” Ms. Ramos says. “I know it’s hard, but don’t be scared. Trust the doctors, choose the medicine, and advocate for yourself.”
