Some people with a form of early-stage breast cancer and low levels of a protein that indicates fast-growing cancer might be able to skip radiation treatment following surgery, according to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Deborah M. Axelrod, MD, director of clinical breast surgery and services at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, calls the study a “feel-good” message for patients with low-risk tumors. The study will help doctors understand which of their patients “can comfortably, with confidence” avoid radiation, Dr. Axelrod, also a professor in the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, tells the Associated Press.
