NYU Langone Health announced today the appointments of Robert J. Cerfolio, MD, MBA, as senior vice president and vice dean, chief of hospital operations, and Daniel J. Widawsky, as senior vice president and vice dean, chief financial officer.

Currently chief of clinical thoracic surgery at NYU Langone, Dr. Cerfolio will oversee all patient care activity, ensuring the highest levels of quality and safety. Throughout his career, Dr. Cerfolio has earned a reputation for clinical innovations that have led to practice-changing advances in patient care. One of the most prolific thoracic surgeons in the world, his development of a new robotic technique yielded improvements in lung cancer surgery that are now practiced worldwide, and which have reduced hospital complications and increased survival rates.

He formerly served as chair of thoracic surgery at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, where he was also chair of the hospital’s Business Intelligence Committee. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester—where in addition to excelling in his studies he was a first-team Academic All-American baseball player—and later completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Cerfolio’s experience as a leader and trailblazer will help NYU Langone continue to improve the quality and efficiency of the patient care delivered.

Daniel J. Widawsky joined NYU Langone as senior vice president and vice dean, chief financial officer, after most recently serving as director of EFO Management, an investment and management firm. His distinguished career has spanned tax law, city government, and investment management, and prior to EFO Management, he served as the comptroller for the city of Chicago, where he oversaw a staff of 650. He has been a managing director and partner at Citadel, one of the world’s leading alternative investment management firms and market makers, as well as the global tax director for the consumer finance division of General Electric, with operations in 54 countries. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a juris doctorate from Yale Law School. His extensive experience in financial strategy and planning for major institutions, and years at the helm of large and complex multinational teams, will help ensure NYU Langone’s financial position remains strong.
