Most Americans refuse to take a sick day unless they simply can’t get out of bed. But many experts say it’s just as important to take a “mental health day” to address issues related to your psychological and emotional wellbeing. But when do you know it’s time to take action?
Marra Ackerman, MD, the director of women’s mental health in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health, explains in a recent article in Women’s Health, that anxiety, day in and day out, can take a toll on a person’s mental health and interrupt important “protectors” like sleep.
One thing Dr. Ackerman recommends is “mindfulness meditation” whether it’s yoga or a day to sleep in. “It’s one thing that can improve your concentration,” Dr. Ackerman says, “which, in turn, can lead to stronger emotional wellbeing.”
