On September 25, 2021, Robert Montgomery, MD, PhD, and the NYU Langone Transplant Institute performed the first genetically modified pig kidney xenotransplant into a recently deceased person. That breakthrough procedure kicked off a series of further studies at other institutions as the global medical community seeks a sustainable source of organs for the thousands in need of a lifesaving transplant.
“For a long time, there was a lack of forward inertia. Now we have it,” Dr. Montgomery, the H. Leon Pachter, MD, Professor of Surgery, chair of the Department of Surgery, and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, tells STAT. “Even the skeptics are coming around.”
