NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine students, faculty, and Dean Gladys M. Ayala, MD, MPH, celebrate Match Day 2026.
After months of waiting and hoping, 24 medical students at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine learned where they will train for residency after graduation. Aspiring doctors at the Mineola medical school took part in a much-anticipated nationwide ceremony known as Match Day, when students open envelopes at the same time to learn the locations of their residency training programs.
For 26-year-old Nicole Bryce, the day was a dream come true. Her passion for pediatrics took root during childhood while she watched her mother run a day care center from their Staten Island home. “My mom had a natural gift with children—a trait I hope to emulate as a physician,” said Bryce, who accepted a guaranteed residency position at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island through the Education to Employment Pathway in Primary Care program, which guarantees placement in a primary care residency program at the Mineola hospital to all students at NYU Grossman Long Island.
The class of 2026 will be the fifth graduating class of the medical school, which is the only one in the country that offers a three-year, tuition-free degree focused on primary care. Its mission is to help address the shortage of primary care physicians in communities across the country.
“We are extremely proud of our soon-to-be graduates and hope they will become the next generation of physician leaders in primary care,” said Dean Gladys M. Ayala, MD, MPH. “Their dedication, compassion, and clinical expertise will be assets to each and every community they serve.”
Every year, residency matches are made through a mutual selection process run by the National Residents Matching Program in which medical students and residency programs around the country rank their preferences. Using a complex algorithm, a computer then generates matches between the students and the more than 38,000 residency positions available.
This year’s celebration took place at 12 p.m. on March 20, when NYU Grossman Long Island students opened their envelopes to reveal their residency matches. They will begin training as residents soon after graduation in May.
Among the latest class of students hoping to make a difference are:
- Delphina Maldonado, a 25-year-old from Bronxville, who grew up surrounded by physicians. Her father is a vascular surgeon, her mother is an obstetrician-gynecologist, her 87-year-old grandmother is a practicing pathologist, and her grandfather is a retired urologist. Maldonado worked in her mother’s OB/GYN clinic during high school and hopes to follow in her footsteps.
- Zvi Grossman, a 26-year-old from Woodmere, Long Island, who was inspired by his father, a primary care physician, and the care he provided to family, friends, and neighbors. Grossman matched to NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island through the Education to Employment Pathway in Primary Care program.
NYU Grossman Long Island students can be matched to any residency position nationwide and the school is pleased to announce that 25 members of the class or 100 percent matched to residencies for five years running. Fifty-two percent (13 students) matched with NYU Langone locations, and 10 of those students matched to NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. All in all, 76 percent of this year’s class (19 students) matched to residency programs in New York State and in primary care specialties that align with the school’s mission. These specialties include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery.
