In her role as leader of a large department, Michelle Kang Kim, MD, PhD, will ensure that patients benefit from the integration of research and clinical care.
NYU Langone Health
Michelle Kang Kim, MD, PhD, a renowned gastroenterologist and NIH-funded clinician-scientist, has joined NYU Langone Health as chair of the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She comes to NYU Langone from Cleveland Clinic, where she most recently chaired the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition within the Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute.
As chair, Dr. Kim will lead a large department that includes the many divisions that exemplify NYU Langone’s strengths in subspecialty medicine, from the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology to the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology. She will guide the department’s clinical, research, and educational missions as NYU Langone continues to set the national standard for quality and safety, expand its research enterprise, and train the next generation of physicians.
“Dr. Kim has a long track record as a clinician who delivers exceptional care and a scientist who turns discovery into better outcomes,” said Alec C. Kimmelman, MD, PhD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone. “Her vision for integrating research and clinical care, and her commitment to ensuring every patient benefits from that progress, will strengthen our Department of Medicine and lead it into its next phase of growth.”
A specialist in gastrointestinal carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumors, Dr. Kim has used data science, predictive models, and biomarkers in her research to predict the development of gastrointestinal cancer and prognosis in carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumors. Her work has advanced the understanding of prognostic factors, biomarkers such as microRNA, and disparities in treatment outcomes among underserved populations. She has published widely in leading journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology, and NEJM Catalyst, and has lectured internationally. Her expertise aligns closely with NYU Langone’s focus on precision medicine.
Dr. Kim succeeds Steven Abramson, MD, who led the Department of Medicine for more than a decade. A distinguished clinician, researcher, and educator, Dr. Abramson strengthened the department’s national reputation by recruiting exceptional faculty and building a strong foundation for continued growth and will remain as the Frederick H. King Professor of Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Professor, Department of Pathology.
“NYU Langone has built a culture where outstanding patient care, rigorous science, and medical education drive each other forward,” said Dr. Kim. “I’m honored to return to New York to lead a department at the center of that culture, and to build on Dr. Abramson’s remarkable legacy by supporting our faculty and ensuring every patient who comes to us receives the highest-quality care.”
