According to Charla R. Fischer, MD, associate professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone’s Spine Center, back pain is the second most common complaint adults share with their primary care provider.
Dr. Fischer tells POPSUGAR about the daily habits and lifestyle factors that can lead to back pain. Stress, smoking, and heavy handbags make the list, along with a lack of core strength and poor posture at your desk job.
“Poor sitting ergonomics can cause repetitive stress injury to the paraspinal muscles,” says Dr. Fischer. “Once those muscles are injured, they contract, go into spasm, and cause pain.”
