Cameron Underwood, 26, of Yuba City, California, received a face transplant earlier this year. He shares his journey with People Magazine in their November 26 print edition.
Eighteen months after Underwood survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound, this past January 2018, Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, led a team of over 100 medical professionals to successfully perform the 25-hour procedure.
Even though the surgery was risky, Cam was determined to change his life: “It was either stay the way I was or take a chance on something better—on a bigger, better life.”
