Noritsugu Naito, MD, a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, has joined NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn as its inaugural chief of cardiac surgery and has been appointed clinical associate professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Naito’s arrival marks a significant milestone for the Sunset Park hospital’s recently expanded scope of NYU Langone Heart services, offering Brooklyn residents comprehensive cardiac care right in their local community, without the need to travel to Manhattan.
“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Dr. Naito to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where his experience will strengthen our cardiac surgery program,” said Bret J. Rudy, MD, executive vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. “His clinical expertise and leadership ability are exceptional, and the Sunset Park community will greatly benefit from his care and dedication to advancing our mission of providing one consistent high standard of care across the entire health system.”
Dr. Naito’s priority is to provide advanced, world-class cardiac care for Brooklynites right in their own community. He will lead and mentor a skilled, multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff, fostering a culture of excellence and compassionate care to meet the needs of the community. Since the expansion of cardiac surgery services, the hospital has created a dedicated coronary care unit for patients recovering from cardiac surgery and successfully performed nearly a dozen open heart procedures.
“I’m honored to lead an exceptional team of healthcare professionals, who are already delivering world-class cardiac surgery services to patients,” said Dr. Naito “As the cardiac surgery program continues to grow, I look forward to raising the bar for innovation to ensure we continue to provide the community with the highest-quality care close to home.”
Dr. Naito, who earned his MD and PhD from the University of Tokyo, completed an advanced cardiac surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in structural heart and valve disease surgery at NYU Langone. He was also a member of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Langone from 2019 to 2023, before returning to Japan for one year, where he most recently served as the director of cardiovascular surgery at Shizuoka Medical Center.
“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Naito rejoin our department and the NYU Langone Heart community,” said Ralph S. Mosca, MD, MBA, the Henry H. Arnhold Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Langone Health and professor in the Departments of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Pediatrics. “His extensive expertise in clinical research, quality and innovation will be invaluable as he leads our cardiac surgery team to new heights in Brooklyn.”
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Naito’s robust research in cardiothoracic surgery includes surgical management of mitral annular calcification through endoscopic robotic mitral repair and survival outcomes following transcatheter aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis.
Over the past nine years, since the former Lutheran Medical Center merged with NYU Langone Health, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn has been transformed, offering comprehensive, high-quality care across specialties to the community. It is recognized by The Leapfrog Group as an A-rated hospital in Brooklyn for patient safety, and it is the only comprehensive cancer center in the borough designated by the National Cancer Institute, a testament to the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class care to patients where they live.
NYU Langone Heart is ranked second in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery programs by U.S. News & World Report and holds a prestigious three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for expertise in mitral valve replacement and repair, aortic valve repair, and coronary artery bypass.
