Patient Portal Messages Have Spiked Since 2020
MedPage Today
A study in JAMA led by Michal Mankowski, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, found that patient portal messaging has surged significantly. Analyzing national data, the research showed patient-authored messages increased by more than 150% over the last six years, rising from 0.99 per patient per year in 2020 to 2.5 in 2025. While telephone encounters saw a slight decline, office visits increased, suggesting messaging is a new communication modality rather than a replacement. The findings highlight the growing workload for clinicians and the need for health systems to adapt.

High Hurdles Thwart Kidney Patients' Pursuit Of Life-Saving Transplants
HealthDay
Less than a fifth of Americans referred for kidney transplants complete the steps necessary to get their name on the waitlist. "Our findings suggest that a substantial proportion of people who need a new kidney fall out of the process long before they reach the waitlist, let alone make it to the operating room," said lead author Conor Donnelly, MD, a surgical resident at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. "Finding ways to reduce barriers to both evaluation and waitlisting could help expand much-needed access to kidney transplantation," said Allan Massie, PhD, associate professor of surgery and population health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
