Epic portal messages up 153% since 2020: Study
Becker's Hospital Review
Researchers from NYU Langone Health published the largest-ever analysis of Epic EHR communications in JAMA, finding that digital tools supplement rather than replace in-person care. The study found online portal messages increased 153% since 2020. Senior investigator Michal Mankowski, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, said messaging is now a routine part of care. Co-investigator Dorry Segev, MD, PhD, a professor and vice chair in the Department of Surgery and professor in the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, noted providers must balance digital and clinical workloads.

Subfecundity Linked to Neurodevelopmental Problems in Offspring
Monthly Prescribing Reference
A study led by Linda Kahn, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, found that subfecundity is associated with increased behavioral problems and higher odds of autism spectrum disorder in offspring, independent of infertility treatment. Analyzing over 15,000 mother-infant dyads, researchers concluded that parents' underlying fertility issues, not the treatments, likely drive these neurodevelopmental outcomes. The study found no significant associations for IVF treatment but did note higher odds of ADHD for children conceived via other non-IVF fertility treatments.

Watching a film reveals how the brain balances eyes and ears
Medical Xpress
A new study in Nature Communications suggests the brain's frontal cortex dynamically shifts attention between sight and sound. Researchers, including senior author Adeen Flinker, PhD, associate professor of neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, recorded brain activity in patients watching a multilingual film. They found that when comprehension through speech was difficult, the brain reallocated resources toward visual signals. The findings could inform therapies for language disorders, autism, and attention deficits. The study's first author is Faxin Zhou, a PhD candidate at NYU Tandon.
