Nieca Goldberg, MD, a cardiologist at NYU Langone Health and the founder of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU Langone, explains that prolonged time in the summer heat can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. She notes that as blood vessels widen to release heat, blood pressure can decrease, particularly with dehydration from sweating, leading to dizziness. Dr. Goldberg adds that hot weather forces the heart to work harder to cool the body. This can stress the cardiovascular system and cause chest discomfort or fainting, especially in individuals with existing heart disease.

How much fiber should you eat daily to prevent constipation?
TODAY
To prevent constipation, adults should consume fiber-rich foods daily, according to Lisa Ganjhu, DO, gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Health. Women should aim for 25–30 grams of fiber per day, while men need 30-38 grams. Dr. Ganjhu explains that soluble fiber creates a gel-like substance to soften stools, while insoluble fiber adds bulk to help it pass faster. For those increasing their fiber intake, she advises adding no more than five grams per week. Drinking more water and regular exercise also aid in prevention.

Bariatric surgery remains an important option for obesity, despite GLP-1 drug boom
MedPage Today
Despite the rising popularity of GLP-1 drugs causing a decline in bariatric procedures, surgery remains a vital option for obesity. Christine Ren-Fielding, MD, division chief of Bariatric Surgery at NYU Langone Health, explains that medications and surgery should be used in parallel rather than sequentially. She noted that while patients may trial GLP-1s, surgery is often more durable with less maintenance, though it requires greater vigilance with lifestyle changes. Studies show surgery leads to more significant weight loss and lower long-term healthcare costs compared to medication alone.

HIIT is the best type of exercise for older women, study suggests
Bicycling Magazine
A new study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology suggests that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with resistance training is more beneficial for older women than other forms of exercise. The research found this combination effectively lowered systolic blood pressure and reduced arterial stiffness. Cordelia Carter, MD, a specialist in sports orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Health, recommends gradually adding HIIT into a schedule two or three times per week. She cautions that progressing too quickly can place stress on joints and potentially cause injury, so it is best to expand sessions over time.

The article also mentions that the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, provides expert treatment for children and adolescents with mental health concerns.

The Independent (US)
Céline Gounder, MD, epidemiologist and clinical associate professor of medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, was cited when coverage revisited an earlier assertion by the Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., that waning immunity contributed to measles spread in southern states. CDC data put the national total at 2,371 by the end of July, with 93 percent of cases involving unvaccinated people. Experts cautioned that school reopening could amplify outbreaks in Ohio, Utah, and Pennsylvania. Kennedy defended the federal response during a CNN interview and urged parents to vaccinate their children.
