Synthetic Gene Helps Explain The Mysteries Of Transcription Across Species. (Science Daily)
Science Daily (3/6) “A research team at NYU Langone Health sought to” examine the differences in RNA transcription between yeasts and mammals “by creating a large, synthetic gene,” inserting it “into yeast and mouse stem cells and” observing “transcription levels in each.” Corresponding author Jef D. Boeke, PhD, the Sol and Judith Bergstein Director, Institute of System Genetics, professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, said, “Understanding default transcription differences across species will help us to better understand what parts of the genetic code have functions, and which are accidents of evolution.” First author Brendan Camellato, a postdoctoral student, Boeke Lab, said, “The closer we get to introducing a ‘genome’s worth’ of nonsense DNA into living cells, the better they can compare it to the actual, evolved genome.” In addition to “Boeke and Camellato, NYU Langone Health study authors were Ran Brosh, PhD, Hannah Ashe, and Matthew T.
