Rachel Bluebond-Langner, MD, one of the country’s notable reconstructive specialists in transgender surgery, recently joined the faculty of NYU Langone Medical Center, which is growing its multidisciplinary program for transgender individuals seeking gender-affirming care.
Dr. Bluebond-Langner enjoys an outstanding reputation in this burgeoning field, and is highly admired and respected by colleagues and patients alike for her superior surgical outcomes and compassionate care. She has performed gender-affirming surgery on individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds, including military veterans.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Bluebond-Langner to help more individuals who are transgender or gender diverse,” says Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone. “New and safer advances in gender-affirming surgery, and in transgender medicine, are increasing the realm of possibility. We want NYU Langone to lead this field, and are confident Dr. Bluebond-Langner is the best surgeon to help us accomplish this.”
Across the globe, demand for transgender surgery continues to grow. Here in the United States, patients may opt to have surgery after meeting clinical guidelines set forth by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). Access to care has increased since many insurance plans, including Medicare, are now required to provide coverage for individuals with gender dysphoria—the medical diagnosis for when an individual’s gender identity does not align with the sex assigned at birth.
Multidisciplinary Care Key to Success
Dr. Bluebond-Langner, appointed as an associate professor in the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, will work closely with NYU Langone’s growing team of talented physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare practitioners representing the many disciplines involved in providing comprehensive healthcare for transgender individuals. These areas include primary care, gynecology, internal medicine, urology, pediatric and adult endocrinology, and mental health, as well as reconstructive and plastic surgery.
Collaborating with her colleagues, Dr. Bluebond-Langner specializes in feminizing and masculinizing plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures for transgender individuals, including breast augmentation; facial feminization, including hairline advancement, correction of brow bossing, malar implants, fat injections, genioplasty, and rhinoplasty; tracheal shave, or reducing the size of the Adam’s apple; vaginoplasty; mastectomy, also referred to as “top surgery”; body contouring; phalloplasty; Supprelin® implants; and revision surgery.
