Andrea H. Brand Is Among This Year’s 120 New Members
Andrea H. Brand, PhD, chair of the Department of Cell Biology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
The academy, established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and provides policy advice to the federal government and other organizations. This year’s election includes 120 new members and 25 international members, who were chosen “in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research,” the organization announced last week.
Dr. Brand, also the Frederick L. Ehrman Professor of Cell Biology, studies nervous system development, identifying the genes that direct the specific behaviors of particular neurological cells—neurons and glia—produced by neural stem cells. Also a professor in NYU Langone Health’s Department of Neuroscience, she studies the genes that regulate the transition from a neural stem cell to a specialized neuronal or glial cell type—research with the long-term aim of repairing or regenerating the nervous system after injury or disease.
