Robert Montgomery, MD, DPhil, the H. Leon Pachter, MD, Professor of Surgery, chair of the Department of Surgery, and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, has been named one of the nation’s top 25 healthcare innovators by Modern Healthcare magazine, one of the healthcare industry’s most respected periodicals.
Dr. Montgomery is being recognized for his efforts in advancing xenotransplantation through his groundbreaking work to transplant genetically modified pig kidneys into recently deceased humans. The first such experiment was conducted on September 25, 2021, and the second just two months later on November 22, 2021.
Xenotransplants can provide an unlimited source of organs to the thousands who die each year from disease. According to the United Organ Sharing Network, in 2021, there were a record 41,354 organ transplants performed in the United States; however, as of April 1, 2022, more than 106,000 people are actively waiting for a lifesaving organ.
The Transplant Institute is a leader in transplantation. The institute is the highest-volume kidney transplant center in New York State and is rated highest in the nation for survival after kidney transplant and survival after being listed for a heart transplant by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
