One of the First Programs of Its Kind in New York
A $5 million gift from the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Foundation will help establish a new center of excellence in cosmetic plastic surgery at NYU Langone—one of the first programs of its kind at an academic medical center in New York.
The Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, expected to open in late 2018, will offer minimally invasive and surgical cosmetic surgery procedures in a new state-of-the art ambulatory facility located in midtown east, at 222 East 41st Street. The Perlmutter Cosmetic Surgery Center, dedicated exclusively to cosmetic plastic surgery, will seamlessly blend an academic teaching environment within a private, boutique-like setting.
The Perlmutter Cosmetic Surgery Center will be part of the prestigious Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, the largest group of board-certified plastic surgeons affiliated with an academic medical center in New York State, and will be headed by Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Rodriguez is a pioneer in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery, having led the most extensive face transplant ever performed.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support the Perlmutters have demonstrated to help individuals to look and feel their best,” says Dr. Rodriguez. “The same professional team that performs complex reconstructive cases at NYU Langone also apply their expertise to cosmetic surgery cases in a new, high-end ambulatory setting,” adds Dr. Rodriguez.
Because the new center is academically based, all practitioners—from surgeons to anesthesiologists—are board-certified with faculty appointments at NYU Langone, which isn’t the case at a majority of private plastic surgery practices in New York.
“Ike and I have gotten to know Dr. Rodriguez well, and have met many of his grateful patients. In turn, we’ve been inspired by their life-changing stories of the effects that plastic surgery has had on their lives,” says Laura Perlmutter. “We hope that our gift will help to extend the excellent and groundbreaking work that Dr. Rodriguez and his team provide to patients.”
Allowing NYU Langone to care for a greater number of patients, the Perlmutters’ gift supports the growth of both the physical practice as well as the size of the care team, enabling the recruitment of renowned aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Rachel Bluebond-Langner, MD, the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Associate Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, one of the country’s notable specialists in transgender surgery. Dr. Bluebond-Langner enjoys an outstanding reputation in this burgeoning field, and is highly admired and respected by colleagues and patients alike for her superior surgical outcomes and compassionate care. Dr. Bluebond-Langner works closely with NYU Langone’s growing team of talented physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare practitioners representing the many disciplines involved in providing comprehensive healthcare for individuals seeking gender-affirming care.
The Perlmutters are longtime supporters of NYU Langone, and serve as members of its Board of Trustees. Laura began her relationship with NYU Langone as a volunteer in the hospital’s gift shop. They have donated more than $70 million to NYU Langone to support various programs, including the naming gift for the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone. They also funded a groundbreaking cancer research initiative between NYU Langone and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and are significant supporters of the Beatrice W. Welters Breast Health Outreach and Navigation Program at Perlmutter Cancer Center.
