Most anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears occur outside of professional stadiums and in recreational, everyday athletes, explains Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and surgeon at the Sports Medicine Center at NYU Langone.
“Pro players are getting maintenance—nutrition, training room care—that the regular guy does not,” says Dr. Gonzalez-Lomas in an interview with GQ.
According to Dr. Gonzalez-Lomas, we engage in less spontaneous exercise activity as we age, especially people who play team sports and often repeat the same movements, which increases risk for injury.
