Welcome to the

Colon Cancer Screening & Prevention Program

We specialize in detecting and removing precancerous polyps, and finding colon cancer in its earliest stages.

Cancers of the colon and rectum are sometimes called colorectal cancer, or just colon cancer. At NYU Langone, we’re working to help prevent colon cancer and to detect it at its earliest stages, when it’s highly curable.

Most colon cancers develop from precancerous growths called polyps. Neither precancerous polyps nor early colon cancers typically cause symptoms. At NYU Langone’s Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Program, our gastroenterologists are highly trained and skilled in colonoscopy screening, during which they can remove polyps before they turn into cancer, or detect colon cancer in its earliest stages.

Our state-of-the-art gastroenterology offices and procedure centers are conveniently located throughout New York City and Long Island. At many of these locations, we offer innovative new colonoscopy technologies, such as full-spectrum endoscopy (FUSE), which allows an enhanced 330-degree view of the colon; cuff-assisted colonoscopy, which helps enhance visualization behind the folds on the wall of the colon; and colon capsule endoscopy, which is available in the rare case that a patient’s colonoscopy cannot be completed.

In addition, some of our locations offer a colonic irrigation procedure to clean out the colon before a colonoscopy. This is a 45-minute, same-day colonoscopy preparation option for patients who are unable to undergo, or who cannot tolerate, the traditional oral preparation regimen.

Our experts collaborate closely with referring physicians, primary care physicians, and other specialists to ensure a comprehensive, compassionate, and patient-centered approach to care. If you are diagnosed with colon cancer, our experts at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center can partner with you to create a highly specialized, personalized plan for treatment, care, and support.
