Leukemia in Children

Leukemia is a type of cancer that causes the body to produce an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells. These prevent normal blood cells from being produced and functioning properly. Doctors at the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, have helped to pioneer some of the most effective treatments for childhood leukemia, which is the most common type of cancer in children. These medical advances have dramatically improved survival rates among children in the past 40 years.

Our specialists promote a family-centered approach to care, encouraging you and your child to have important roles on the healthcare team, which includes hematologist–oncologists, pediatricians, pathologists, pediatric nurses, nurse practitioners, a dentist, physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, a nutrition specialist, and child life and integrative health specialists.

Doctors at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center diagnose and manage leukemia in adults, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic myelogenous leukemia.
