We offer immediate diagnosis and treatment of stroke, as well as rehabilitation services.
NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Stroke Care Center offers rapid diagnosis, effective treatment, and rehabilitative care for people who have experienced a stroke.
We are certified by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. This means that our team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and specially trained nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide the most advanced stroke care.
Rapid Diagnosis and Treatment of a Stroke
If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of stroke, seek emergency care immediately. At NYU Langone, stroke care usually begins at the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services or NYU Lutheran Emergency Department. Experienced triage nurses sound an alert if they suspect someone has had a stroke or seems to be having one. This alert brings the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center’s team of experts to the patient’s bedside within minutes.
Our stroke neurologists, who are trained in emergency care, are among the first to see a patient. They intervene quickly, ordering tests such as brain scans or an echocardiogram of the heart to confirm a stroke diagnosis. They then determine the type of stroke the patient is having, which helps us determine the best treatment plan. Your stroke neurologist is the team leader who coordinates all your care.
Doctors from Rusk Rehabilitation are active members of the stroke care team, and may become involved as early as the first 24 hours after hospitalization. They assess what kinds of specialized rehabilitation services are needed, including physical therapy, speech–language pathology, psychology, and therapies for swallowing disorders.
Inpatient rehabilitation often begins at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital or NYU Lutheran Medical Center and may continue for an additional two to three weeks at Rusk Rehabilitation’s inpatient units for stroke rehabilitation, which are located within NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases and NYU Lutheran Augustana Center.
We also provide outpatient rehabilitation services through Rusk Rehabilitation locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.
