Welcome to the

Comprehensive Stroke Care Center

We offer immediate diagnosis and treatment, as well as rehabilitation services.

NYU Langone’s Comprehensive Stroke Care Center offers rapid diagnosis, effective treatment, and long-term rehabilitation for stroke. In 2005, we were named Manhattan’s first primary stroke care center, and we’re currently recognized as one of the leading centers of this kind in both the region and the country.

Neurologist Dr. Koto Ishida with Patient

For the past four years, our Comprehensive Stroke Care Center has been awarded Gold Plus designation and the Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association as part of its “Get with the Guidelines” program, which recognizes hospitals that use the most up-to-date practices and procedures for the treatment of stroke. This year, we are proud to announce that in addition to being a New York State-certified Comprehensive Stroke Program, we have attained specialty disease certification in primary stroke care from The Joint Commission.

Rapid Diagnosis and Treatment of a Stroke

At NYU Langone, the first course of action in stroke treatment usually takes place at the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services. There, an experienced triage nurse screens patients and activates an alert if a patient has had a stroke or seems to be having one. The alert brings the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center’s team of experts to the patient’s bedside within minutes.

Dr. Koto Ishida and Team Analyze Scans

Our experts are able to intervene quickly to distinguish stroke versus non-stroke symptoms and order tests such as brain scans or an echocardiogram of the heart to either confirm or rule out a stroke diagnosis.

Stroke neurologists are especially critical to successful treatment. Our stroke neurologists are specialized physicians who are trained in emergency care evaluation. They are among the first to see a patient and initiate treatment. In addition, while patients are in the hospital, a stroke neurologist acts as the team leader, coordinating all of the patient’s care.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Physicians from Rusk Rehabilitation are also active members of the stroke care team, and may become involved as early as the first 24 hours after a patient’s hospitalization, assessing what kinds of specialized rehabilitation services are needed, including physical therapy, speech-language pathology, psychology, and therapies for swallowing disorders.
Inpatient rehabilitation often begins in the Acute Stroke Unit of Tisch Hospital and may continue for an additional two to three weeks at Rusk Rehabilitation’s inpatient unit for stroke rehabilitation, which is located within the Hospital for Joint Diseases.
