About Me

I had two major role models—both physicians—along the road to becoming a rheumatologist.

The first was my grandfather, who was certified in both neurology and psychiatry. He was an “old school” doctor. As a young man, I enjoyed speaking with him about the way he cared for patients and his empathic and humanistic approach to medicine. I believe I have succeeded in emulating these qualities in my own practice, to this day.

My other role model was one of my rheumatology professors in medical school and residency. A brilliant and eminent rheumatologist, he led by example and loved teaching. His enthusiasm for the field inspired me to pursue rheumatology.

I was fascinated by the conditions we learned about—conditions I now help patients manage—because they affect different parts of the body, and their symptoms can sometimes be camouflaged. These include autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitis, which are typically characterized by inflammation.

Everyday I bring the enthusiasm and knowledge I have gained from my role models to my care of patients. I am open and transparent about my thought process, diagnosis, and treatment, and I think my patients appreciate that I am very approachable and aim to develop respect and trust in our interactions.
