Welcome to the

Pediatric Diabetes Center

We provide expert care for children with diabetes.

When your child receives a diabetes diagnosis, coping with the necessary changes to their routine can be a challenge for the entire family. That’s why the care team at the Robert I. Grossman, MD, and Elisabeth J. Cohen, MD, Pediatric Diabetes Center partner with you and your family to provide the expert care your child needs to manage their condition, while also supporting you through the social and emotional changes that can accompany this diagnosis

We care for infants, children, and adolescents who have type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and other less common forms of diabetes, as well as children and adolescents who are at risk of developing the condition. Our pediatric endocrinologists, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, combine their clinical skills with the latest in diabetes management technology to provide your child with the best treatment possible.

Many new tools are available to continuously monitor glucose levels and to deliver insulin. Your child may be able to use a device that incorporates both of these functions. This allows more accurate insulin delivery and benefits your child’s health and your peace of mind.

Our Team Approach to Diabetes Care for Children

Our certified diabetes care and education specialists help your child and family learn how to fit diabetes management into your everyday lives. We help you handle new challenges, including regular glucose monitoring and managing glucose levels. Through our Helping Schools Care for Children with Type 1 Diabetes program, our certified diabetes care and education specialists can visit your child’s school and provide education and training to the school nurse and other staff so they are well prepared to help your child succeed throughout the school day.

We offer families a range of support services. Registered dietitians address nutrition challenges in children of all ages, from breastfed infants to teenagers making their own food choices. Our child life specialists help children cope with procedures such as blood tests and provide strategies for adjusting to life with diabetes. They also work with children and their siblings to help the entire family understand the diagnosis.

In addition, we provide on-site consultation with a psychologist, neuropsychologist, and a child and adolescent psychiatrist through our KiDS of NYU Foundation Integrated Behavioral Health Program. This includes psychosocial assessments that can help determine how we may best support you and your child as they grow and gradually assume more responsibility for the management of their diabetes. We continue to provide support during the adolescent years, when young adults are learning to become independent while still safely managing their diabetes.

We make it easy for you to meet with all of your care team members—doctors, educators, research staff, social workers, and child life specialists—in one place. Laboratory testing may also be performed in our office. Our doctors can also provide referrals to experts who treat conditions that may occur along with diabetes, including thyroid disease and celiac disease.
