Friends,
NYU Long Island School of Medicine—a partnership between New York University and NYU Langone Health—offers full-tuition scholarships with an accelerated three-year curriculum exclusively devoted to training primary care physicians. After the merging of Winthrop-University Hospital and NYU Langone Health, Steven Shelov, MD, was appointed as the founding dean and was asked to lead the effort of creating this new, independent medical school.
Dr. Shelov became dean in 2017 and welcomed the first class of students to NYU Long Island School of Medicine in 2019. He guided them through the three-year program and celebrated the inaugural graduating class in May 2022. The first class of graduating doctors was impressive: 100 percent matched for top-tier residencies, 90 percent selected primary care, 40 percent matched with NYU Langone, and most said they will stay in or return to the Long Island community to serve.
Additionally, Dr. Shelov helped lead the Liaison Committee on Medical Education’s approval of NYU Long Island School of Medicine’s provisional accreditation status, which is expected to be completed in 2023 with the granting of full accreditation. NYU Long Island School of Medicine would not be where it is today without Dr. Shelov’s leadership and guidance.
To honor Dr. Shelov’s retirement and his contributions to NYU Long Island School of Medicine, we are excited to announce the Steven P. Shelov, MD Lecture to honor Dr. Shelov’s commitment to the education of aspiring doctors and his more than 50-year career in medicine.
Please join us in celebrating Dr. Shelov with a gift in support of the Lecture to be held annually in his name. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Shelov has given generously with his time and wisdom. Please consider the lasting impact you can make with a gift to endow a lectureship in perpetuity. Your donation will join that of others to establish an endowed lecture at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. We hope you will join us in supporting this effort.
