As concern over 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) grows, why are public health officials discouraging healthy people from buying face masks? And why do so many media accounts depict people wearing masks?
Leora Horwitz, MD, director of the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science and associate professor in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone, explains who needs face masks, and why most people who use them will either not be protected or use the mask incorrectly—possibly increasing the risk of exposure.
“When every hospital is rationing and conserving, it would help if the general public weren’t also buying and hoarding N95s that they will never have a good use for,” Dr. Horwitz tells NBC News.
