Twenty-year-old Jane Noury’s journey and challenges growing up as a young trans woman are chronicled in Always Jane, a four-part documentary series streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Jane had gender-affirming surgery with Rachel Bluebond-Langner, MD, the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Associate Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery, and Lee C. Zhao, MD, associate professor in the Department of Urology and Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery, in the midst of the pandemic in 2020. Dr. Bluebond-Langner and Dr. Zhao are also co-directors of NYU Langone’s Gender-Affirming Surgery Program.
“Jane showed such strength and resilience throughout the very vulnerable experience of undergoing a life-changing operation, and I’m glad our team at NYU Langone could support Jane growing ever stronger,” says Dr. Bluebond-Langner.
Jane’s surgery was a success, and she has never been happier. She is currently a film student at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
“For me, personally, I needed to have surgery to help me along the road. I needed that in my transition. But a lot of people don’t need that,” says Jane. Gender-affirming surgery, though crucial and intensive healthcare for many trans people, is “not the overall goal, and your life still continues after surgery,” adds Jane.
