Sala Patient & Family Faculty Program

Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff can learn a lot from patients and parents about what the experience is like for children who receive care at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone. Members of our Sala Patient and Family Faculty Program use their personal experiences and stories to teach our pediatric care teams and medical students.

Family Partnership Programs

Through our Sala Family Advisory Council, Sala Youth Advisory Council, and Sala Patient and Family Faculty Program, we give a voice to the children and families we serve.

Through this program, parents work in partnership with clinicians to teach doctors, nurses, and support staff the importance of treating each family with respect and compassion. This includes providing suggestions for the best words to choose when sharing a new diagnosis as well as discussing how to make family members partners in decision making. We want to know where we are succeeding at caring for children and families, and where there is room for improvement. Patient and Family Faculty Program services are made possible through the expertise and resources of our Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

“The Family Faculty taught me important things about the experience of illness that I simply could never have learned from a textbook.”

Emily, Third-Year Medical Student, NYU School of Medicine

When our staff better understands what it feels like to be a patient or a family member, everyone benefits. The Patient and Family Faculty Program is an important part of our mission to nurture a culture of child- and family-centered care.
