Learning & Academic Achievement Service

If you are concerned about your child’s academic progress, such as learning to read, write, or do math, or feel he or she is not reaching other developmental milestones at the same pace as others the same age, experts at the Learning and Academic Achievement Service can help.

We evaluate preschool-aged children through young adults. Our learning experts come up with a comprehensive profile of your child’s learning abilities and develop tailored recommendations that consider your child’s early development, current behavior, and neurodevelopmental functioning, which is the brain’s ability to learn and process information.

Our experts help you to understand the source of your child’s struggles, be it a cognitive delay, learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, or another neurodevelopmental condition, such as motor, language, or attention-based limitation. We also help students who are advanced academically to adjust to increased demands, expectations, and independence.

Neuropsychology Evaluations

Our neuropsychologist meets with you to answer any questions you have and discuss the evaluation components with you. We ask that you send us your child’s academic and medical records prior to the appointment, so we can have a full understanding of your concerns and your child’s developmental and learning history.  We also connect with your child’s teacher or other providers and perform an observation of him or her in the classroom, when appropriate, in order to ensure we have obtained a full picture of your child’s current abilities.

Our neuropsychologist then meets with your child to assess his or her intellectual performance, language abilities, attention and executive functioning skills, learning and memory, fine motor coordination, visual spatial skills, and academic achievement. Autism screening tools are included in our evaluations when deemed appropriate.

Our tests examine your child’s competence in these areas:

  • verbal and nonverbal reasoning
  • cognitive processing speed and academic fluency
  • language processing and phonological awareness, which is the foundation for learning to read
  • attention and concentration
  • visual spatial, visual motor, and visual perceptual skills, which help with reading, math, and social functioning
  • learning and memory
  • executive functioning
  • fine motor functioning
  • academic skills across reading, spelling, writing, and math

Social, emotional, and behavioral issues are also evaluated if they are areas of concern.

These evaluations are helpful in addressing questions related to learning disabilities, intellectual deficits, language disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive functioning limitations, complications associated with developmental delays, emotional and behavioral disorders, concussion and other brain injuries, seizure disorders, complications of medical and neurological conditions, and giftedness.

Follow-Up Treatment

After your child’s evaluation is complete, the Child Study Center’s neuropsychologists discuss the results with you, your child, and his or her teachers. We participate in discussions at your child’s school to help develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and help determine if an alternative school or classroom placement is required. Working together, we develop practical solutions that can be used at home and school.

We also can refer your child to our team of child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists, educational specialists, occupational therapists, and speech–language pathologists, as necessary.
