NYU Langone Health Launches a New Advanced Spinal Cord Imaging & 3-D Surgical Navigation Program in Neurosurgery

NEW YORK May 10, 2018 - NYU Langone’s Departments of Neurosurgery and Radiology have launched a new collaborative spinal imaging research and development program that will include cutting-edge MRI techniques, three-dimensional (3-D) virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR) tools, and preoperative surgical planning software that can be applied to patients undergoing neurological spine surgery. The program is led by two nationally renowned experts in the field: Anthony K. Frempong-Boadu, MD, associate professor of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery, Director of the division of Spinal Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Spine Center at NYU Langone Health; and Timothy M. Shepherd, MD, PhD, a clinician-scientist and assistant professor in the Department of Radiology and Director of NYU Langone’s Brain Mapping Service.

The Advanced Spinal Cord Imaging & 3-D Surgical Navigation Program is developing a new treatment paradigm that uses advanced imaging technology engineered for the brain and applies it to the spine, allowing surgeons to better locate tumors, achieve greater tumor excision, improve functional outcomes, and increase long-term survival for patients with surgically treated Intermedullary Spinal Cord Tumors (IMSCTs). Accomplishing these important goals for improved patient care requires close collaboration between neuroradiology, spinal neurosurgery, and operative integration of AR/VR. The technology involved uses 3-D CT and MRI imaging studies to create an individualized walkthrough for surgery – this allows surgeons to plan and rehearse the procedure non-invasively in mixed reality and reference back intraoperatively.

Dr. Frempong-Boadu, Dr. Shepherd and their team will build on recent advancements in visualization and navigation using AR/VR to automate much of the subtle, yet critical, real-time decision-making required during tumor resection surgery.

“During these procedures, our goal is to get the greatest amount of resection of the tumor possible with the least amount of functional decline,” says Dr. Frempong-Boadu. “Thanks to this advanced technology and collaborative program, we can visualize exactly where the motor tracks of a patient’s spinal cord and all other relevant structures are at all times, allowing us to go in and remove the tumor with confidence.”
