Two influences shaped my decision to pursue a career in surgery. First, several members of my extended family worked in healthcare, including an uncle who was a surgeon. Watching them work helped me realize how fulfilling it can be to assist people to heal from sickness.

Second, I’ve always gravitated toward pursuits that involve working on and perfecting things with my hands, whether fixing gadgets or playing the piano. Endocrine surgery is the perfect specialty for me because it combines the intellectual challenge of understanding complex hormonal conditions, the physical challenge of mastering delicate and precise surgery, and the rewarding human connections that come from caring for people.

As an endocrine surgeon, I treat people who have conditions requiring surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. At NYU Langone, we have the benefit of a world-class multidisciplinary team of surgeons, endocrinologists, oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists. These specialists can manage any endocrine condition, from initial diagnosis to treatment, efficiently and comprehensively. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to provide the most current, advanced, and individualized care for the people we treat.

Ours is among the largest and busiest endocrine surgery programs in the country. It is at the forefront of the latest innovations and research in the field.

My major research interests focus on innovative surgical techniques and alternative treatment technologies. As director of minimally invasive endocrine surgery, I lead an active clinical and research program in scarless endoscopic thyroidectomy—I was among the pioneers of this procedure in the United States—as well as in minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and adrenalectomy. I also lead the Department of Surgery program that supports the development of surgical innovations.
