Christine Mikhail, PA

I am a first-generation American, born and raised in New York by immigrant parents. My father was the driving force behind me pursuing a career as a physician assistant. He arranged opportunities for me to shadow physician assistants at medical offices, and I was lucky enough to meet several who were compassionate, patient, confident, hardworking, and knowledgeable. That experience drew me to the field. Working as a physician assistant allows me to connect with people on a very intimate level, whether I’m making a diagnosis, discussing treatment options, or lending an ear when needed.

I chose the specialty of gastroenterology after spending a few years practicing in urgent care and conducting clinical research. I enjoy this specialty’s complexity—gastroenterology involves the study of several organs—and that it allows me to interact with patients. Every day is a learning experience. I am passionate about providing accessible care to help my patients understand the disease process and learn how better to manage symptoms.

At NYU Langone Huntington Medical Group, I care for people who have conditions affecting various parts of the digestive tract. This may include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. I also treat people who have liver, gallbladder, pancreatic, and biliary diseases. 

Another part of my job is educating people about colon cancer screening, including colonoscopy, which our doctors perform in our ambulatory surgical center. I also prepare people for endoscopic procedures, such as video capsule endoscopy or upper endoscopy for acid reflux or swallowing disorders.

My treatment approach is multifaceted and includes lifestyle modifications and nutritional education, in addition to medication. I’m a partner to my patients. I help them to take control of their lives. My goal is to ensure their condition is not the focus of their entire day.

Communication between a patient and a provider is crucial. I am an advocate for the people I treat and want them to trust and rely on me. I keep the lines of communication between us open, with the aim of helping each patient feel comfortable, confident, independent, and empowered. 

I am certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and a member of the New York State Society of Physician Assistants.
