Research Summary

My research interest lies primarily in regional anesthesia and opioid-sparing pain management techniques. I am the principal investigator of multiple IRB-approved studies.  The first compares liposomal bupivacaine (Exparel®) plus bupivacaine 0.5% versus bupivacaine 0.5% in patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty. A second study compares quadratus lumborum block plus periarticular injection versus periarticular injection in patients undergoing primary hip arthroscopy surgery. Both of these studies are aimed at discovering novel ways to minimize opioid use in patients undergoing painful orthopedic procedures. Another area of research focus is on Tranexamic acid (TXA) and its influence on blood loss after shoulder arthroplasty surgery. Currently, we have 2 studies looking at the effect of TXA on anticoagulated patients undergoing going shoulder replacement surgery as well as patients undergoing revision shoulder surgery.

In this era of the opioid epidemic, I believe the anesthesiologist can serve as a gatekeeper to prevent future opioid dependence by utilizing multimodal analgesia and optimizing the pain management regimen in the perioperative period.
