Jessica M. Vernon, MD

Both my parents are medical professionals, and becoming a doctor seemed like a natural career choice for me. As a child, I loved hearing stories from my parents about their patients and seeing how fulfilling it was for them to help others on a daily basis.

During medical school, I had the opportunity to work with obstetricians and gynecologists and their midwife partners along the U.S.–Mexico border. I saw how rewarding it could be to provide continuity of care to patients and form a relationship over time. I had the privilege of caring for women throughout labor and delivery—often a woman’s most arduous and yet joyful experience. Working with midwives and physicians, I learned the art and science of the birth process and how to support and guide a woman through labor and delivery to achieve a safe and healthy outcome.

After having my first child in 2018, I gained an even greater love and appreciation for my chosen specialty, understanding at a deeper level the importance of partnership and trust among the physician, patient, and family.

At NYU Langone Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates, I am director of the Perinatal Mental Health Program as well as Physician Advisor for the Black Mothers Matter Committee. In these roles I have spearheaded the development of programs that provide a more holistic approach to patient care including mental and emotional support throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period. I also manage low- and high-risk pregnancies and I treat women who have a variety of gynecological conditions. I chose to practice obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Langone because our providers are very good at what they do and follow the highest and most current standards of care. I am proud to work with a team of warm, caring people who want the best for their patients and are supportive of each other.

As part of NYU Langone, we have access to excellent hospital facilities, support staff, subspecialty teams, and residents. No matter what emergency situation comes through the door or how high risk a woman’s pregnancy may be, we have the resources to ensure that our patients have the best possible outcomes.

As a physician, I believe that developing a care plan requires input and understanding from the patient. This is why I encourage women to feel empowered and play an active role by asking questions, discussing all options, and making an educated decision with the help of their care team.

I am a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
