Our Approach to Treating

Mitral Valve Disease in Adults

At NYU Langone, our internationally recognized cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, and imaging specialists work as a team to treat people with mitral valve disease, in which a major heart valve doesn’t function properly. People with this condition can experience fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling in the ankles and feet, and irregular heartbeat. Two of the main types of mitral valve disease are mitral valve regurgitation and mitral valve stenosis.

VIDEO: NYU Langone doctors use innovative treatments and minimally invasive procedures to care for people who have mitral valve disease.

Doctors at our Heart Valve Center are pioneers in innovative procedures for the treatment of mitral valve disease, including minimally invasive mitral valve repair, robotic mitral valve repair, and transcatheter procedures. Our doctors have been performing minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgeries longer than doctors at any other program in the country. Our specialists have the expertise to manage these conditions through early intervention, limiting the need for valve replacement and future surgeries.

Treatment for Mitral Valve Disease in Adults

Treatment of mitral valve disease may include nonsurgical transcatheter techniques and surgery, which our specialists often perform using minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques. When required, our surgeons also perform sternotomy, also known as open heart surgery, which can be done by dividing the breastbone or through small incisions in the ribcage.

Your doctor helps you decide which treatment is best for you.
