Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster Program

To help you prepare for procedures, tests, hospitalization, or rehabilitation at NYU Langone, we offer the Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster program based on the techniques developed by Peggy Huddleston. This program teaches you how to feel calmer before surgery and during your recovery process.

We recommend that you start the program one to two weeks prior to surgery, but even one day of the program can provide benefits.

As part of the program, our trained facilitators conduct workshops to teach relaxation techniques by phone or in person. Relaxation imagery can be used during any procedure, but is especially helpful during MRI scans, biopsies, chemotherapy, endoscopy, radiation therapy, cardiac catheterization, physical or cardiac rehabilitation, and any other major therapies or procedures.

The program uses five steps to ease stress-related symptoms prior to surgery and improve recovery time. Using the instruction pamphlet and accompanying audio, you’re encouraged to explore the process of relaxation.

By practicing deep relaxation, it is possible to reduce anxiety and promote a feeling of calmness, which in turn soothes the nervous system and helps strengthen the immune system. Relaxation also helps balance the endocrine and cardiovascular systems, which promotes overall healing.

On the day of your surgery, you can ask your surgeon, anesthesiologist, or operating room nurse to say healing statements to you prior to your procedure.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster™ workshops are held in person on Tuesdays from 2:00PM to 3:00PM, over the phone on Thursdays from 10:00AM to 11:00AM, and by appointment throughout the week. Call 212-263-5767 to reserve a spot.

This program is offered free of charge to patients and their families and friends through a grant from The New Tamarind Foundation.
