Goldman Sachs Dehnert Family Pediatric Rehabilitation Integrative Health Program
Through the Goldman Sachs Dehnert Family Pediatric Rehabilitation Integrative Health Program, we aim to significantly enhance the overall care and experience for our pediatric patients and their parents, while also creating an opportunity for innovative clinical and academic research. Services are provided through Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.
Our program provides holistic care to help ease pain, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and other symptoms for children and their parents at NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases. Our program addresses the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
Services we offer include the following.
Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster for Pediatric Spine Patients
The Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster™ program is a mind-body surgery preparation program based on techniques developed by Peggy Huddleston. Using this unique program, patients and families learn tools that can help them feel calmer before surgery and aid in the recovery process.
Mind-Body Skills Group
This weekly group consists of a “check-in” during which participants are invited to share how they are feeling. There is also group drumming based on the HealthRHYTHMS protocol, and a meditative art activity such as creating a large group mandala, collage, or painting activity.
This weekly group meets during lunchtime and provides a place for caregivers and staff to practice guided meditation. Group topics have included breath awareness meditation, metta meditation, and tea meditation.
Chair Yoga Group
Once a week, caregivers and staff can practice chair yoga, a gentle form of yoga that is modified and performed seated in chair.
Muscular Dystrophy Association Parent Support Group
A service coordinator from the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a social worker from the Hospital for Joint Diseases, and an integrative health specialist lead this group. Parents can meet, share their stories, learn about resources, and practice mind-body skills together, such as relaxation breathing or guided imagery.
Weekly Parent and Caregiver Wellness Tea Time
Parents and caregivers of children on the pediatric rehabilitation unit learn about integrative health while socializing and sharing a healthy snack. Group topics have included relaxation breathing, Reiki, and chair yoga. Parents are invited to participate in individualized integrative health sessions after the group as their schedule permits.
Massage is used to promote pain reduction and relaxation. Massage services are available to parents to help reduce the stress associated with their child’s hospital stay. Massages are given by a qualified provider in your child’s room or family waiting area.
This program is made possible through the generosity of Goldman Sachs Gives at the recommendation of Mark and Mindy Dehnert. These programs are available free of charge to pediatric patients, parents, and caregivers at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.
