Pediatric & Neonatal Transport Program

Our pediatric and neonatal transport team provides safe transport and expert care for infants and children transferred to Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone from other hospitals in the tristate area and beyond.

As part of the Pediatric and Neonatal Transport Program, we provide transport for children of all ages who need highly specialized medical and surgical care at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. This includes the following care:

• Advanced medical care for newborns is provided in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tisch Hospital, which is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Regional Perinatal Center.
• In our Congenital Cardiovascular Care Unit, babies and children with congenital heart defects and other heart conditions are cared for by doctors who perform more than 200 heart surgeries a year as part of the Pediatric Congenital Heart Program.
• Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is available for infants and children with reversible heart and lung disorders in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Epilepsy treatment is provided through our Pediatric Epilepsy Program, which includes our pediatric neurosurgeons who provide vagus nerve stimulation and other device therapies.
• Transplant care, including heart transplant, kidney transplant, and bone marrow transplant, is provided by our skilled team of pediatric transplant specialists.

Members of the Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital pediatric and neonatal team include pediatric critical care nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists, as determined by your child’s needs.

How the Transport Team Works

Our transport phone line is answered at all times by a critical care nurse. The nurse gathers essential information about your child and their health and connects your child’s doctor with one of our attending physicians. The attending physician provides immediate medical advice, selects the makeup of the transport team needed for your child’s transport and ensures that any necessary medical or surgical resources are in place for their arrival.

The transport team travels in an ambulance with medications and medical equipment that they anticipate your child may need during the trip to Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. Whenever possible, we accommodate one parent riding with their child in the ambulance.

When your child arrives at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, they are taken directly to the appropriate treatment unit. At Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, all of our patient rooms are single-bedded and have private bathrooms. We encourage caregivers to participate in Family-Centered Rounds with their child’s medical team. We also provide child life services, emotional support, and spiritual care.
